CD Reviews

After 100 years still off the wall
Mr. Ian George Fraser | Brazil | 09/10/2007
(5 out of 5 stars)

"Stravinsky's Rite of Spring, written some 100 years ago remains the epitome of what is considered shocking and avant-garde even in today's sated modern world. I'm not sure which is the most unnerving aspect of this music, its violence, its overt sexuality, its complete rewrite of the concept of religion or its simple banality. Its rhythms are the everyday rhythms of African music, though this alone of course would have been extremely challenging to the listener of 100 years ago; but somehow nothing about this piece seems ordinary even today. It is, even now, a complete and absolute one-off. I have listened to a number of performances. Mehta and the Philharmonic Orchestra are the bottom line, nervous, agitated, powerful and violent, yet perfectly controlled. The ensemble, especially difficult in such a rhythmically challenging piece is immaculate. This IS the performance to listen to. Enjoy it, if you up for it."
The Shock of the New

"I'll be honest; classical music isn't really my thing unless it's loud and no-one starts to sing while sweating. As for ballet; it's something my mum likes. And, yes, this is the start point of Modernist music, so it's not strictly classical ...

However ... I like it. I bought this because I know The Rite Of Spring caused a riot on it's first outing. It demands a listen just for that reason, surely. Immediately, it sounds like film music, but to our ears of course it will. That aside, there is an elemental savagery in the constantly shifting, agitated composition I don't normally hear at the cinema. Whatever it was that inspired Stravinsky to create this piece, please can I buy some.

The second part of this CD, Symphony in Three Movements, is only slightly less destabilising, nevertheless, this piece too demands your alertness, keeping you awake at all hours. If you like Prog or Jazz Rock, you'll understand what I mean.

We all have our own heroes who invented Rock n' Roll, Punk, Metal. All of them may nod respectfully towards Igor and how he caused a theatre-load of Parisian socialites to have a punch-up. How shocking.
