"Great songs by Dylan, Rick and others. Fantastic band. Some of the best pedal steel you'll ever hear. If you are longing for more of that early 70's country/rock, this CD is a must."
Unheralded but superb!

"Faced with the prospect of being an "oldies act" for the rest of his career, Rick Nelson did a radical shift away from good ol' rock 'n roll in the late Sixties/early Seventies and released several albums that typify the best of what's now known as "country rock." This collection and a subsequent "Volume 2" feature the cream of those albums, and they showcase a guy with great interpretive abilities (he arguably does the most definitive versions of Bob Dylan's songs this side of the Byrds), really good songs of his own and a crack ensemble backing him to the hilt. The Stone Canyon Band featured some the finest musicians in the business (the great Tom Brumley on pedal steel, past-Poco-and-future-Eagle Randy Meisner on bass, Allan Kemp doing lead guitar) and they and the others who came into the group at various points give Nelson's pleasant tenor a big push forward. Nelson holds his own at all times, whether he rocks out with "If You Gotta Go, Go Now," downshifts to gentle with "Lifestream" and "Anytime" or waxes sardonic with--what else--"Garden Party," still one of the best commentaries on the dangers of nostalgia. This showcases a fine artist who died all too soon, but he at least never ended up having to "drive a truck," as he puts it in "Garden Party.""

"Rick Nelson & The Stone Canyon Band have some of the most memorable music. This is great way to start your collection. It does have a few holes in it but you can fill them in by purchasing Volume 2. It features great LP tracks and some of his more obscure 45's from 1969-1976. This is an imported collection that is now out of print."
