CD Reviews

Great introduction to Wakemans universe
Jesper Hansen | Ringkobing Denmark | 04/08/2000
(4 out of 5 stars)

"Having got Wakemans Criminal Record I was delighted to find this fair-priced compilation. This album shows the different sides of Wakemans music. From intimate piano pieces to virtous synth solos. Even though there isn't as much depth and atmosphere in the music as say, Jarre and Pickford it has something neither of the two other has. Virtousity! Wakeman is a true master of the piano and he isn't afraid to let us know! Most pieces feature Listz speed solos and that is something that is rarely heard in Electronic music. This album has opened a door two a new musical universe for me. Even though many of the tracks have the same "feel" it is still worth every dollar. If you're a fan of electronic/instrumental music you owe it to yourself to listen to it"
INCREDIBLE VALUE FOR 2 CDS OF GREAT MUSIC!
greggpaul | staten island, ny USA | 03/26/2000
(5 out of 5 stars)

"WOW! How can I describe this music to the unenlightened? I hear a bit of ALAN PARSONS, EMERSON, LAKE & PALMER, YANNI, KANSAS, and of course, YES (Wakeman's former group). Wakeman is keyboardist extraordinaire; this mostly instrumental compilation contains original compositions full of melodic keyboards and synthesizers and wonderful percussion. This is sure to delight any aging baby-boomer: so get those kids (and spouse?) to bed, remove the bifocals, plug in the headphones, and kick back and enjoy some of the greatest music of the last century!"
Short on essence
Adriano Busson | 09/15/2001
(3 out of 5 stars)

"This 2-CD offering should have been condensed into one. Many of the songs sound the same, and while good technically, they are somewhat mechanical, lacking soul, energy, essence. Other Wakeman efforts, both as a solist and with Yes, have these qualities, even in the quiet moments, but they are lacking in many of the songs here. Particularly galling are the liner notes which slam Yes' double album from the 1970's, "Tales From Topographic Oceans". Wakeman's dislike for "Tales" is well-documented, but many fans consider it to be one of Yes' most original and complelling works. Is it really necessary to trash it 25 years later? This is not what I was expecting from a CD titled "The Masters"."
