Synopsis

On Heart of Hearts, tenor and soprano saxist Rick Margitza and mates play with a relaxed, at times jaunty lilt that makes for pleasant, and, on occasion, compelling listening. Not that they don't swing hard and grab the ear, but there's a light crispness here that gives the music a slightly abstract feel. Margitza's tenor has a warm, mature tone, round and expressive, reminiscent of Charles Lloyd's. For most of the album, he melds John Coltrane-inspired phrasing with a light, Stan Getz-like sound that implies assurance and a hint of sentimentality. On the nine-minute "Father John," however, Margitza makes direct sonic references to the Coltrane influence, roaring through the changes with an edgy zeal; inexplicably, the cut fades out unresolved. Throughout, the rhythm section complements Margitza's perambulations in fine fashion, but, make no mistake, this is the sax player's show and he stretches out accordingly. --Wally Shoup

CD Reviews

One of the Best
Edmund Velasco | Whittier, CA United States | 09/13/2000
(5 out of 5 stars)

"Rick Margitza has one of the most unique and interesting voices on the jazz scene today. His melodic aproach draws the listener in while the depth of his solos traps and delights. Joey Calderazzo is at his best while Scott Colley and Ian Froman really bring this recording to new levels of greatness. This is the best new recording I've heard in a long time."
ANOTHER GREAT EFFORT FROM R MARGITZA
Dion Siyluy | usa | 05/27/2000
(5 out of 5 stars)

"Rick Margitza has always entertain me with every single one of his release. What makes him so listenable compared to the bunch of Tenor/Soprano players out there is his love for melody and it shows in this release. He has a lot of technique but he lets loose at just the right time thereby making his music more pleasant and not as if it were just an excercise. I highly recommend this release."
Margitza - the best of the best!

"Rick Margitza and Chris Potter are the most inventive and technically proficient players on the scene today. Margitza
has a breathtakingly pure tone and an awesome command of jazz
vocabulary. His solos are constructed at the highest level of
musicality - clean execution, never hurried. As a jazz sax player myself I can say with hesitation that this is one of the best sax albums I've ever heard. One wonders why we haven't heard more about this genius!"
