"Watching Rick James lip-sync "U Bring The Freak Out" on a 1983 television show instantly made me a fan. Shortly after, I purchased COLD BLOODED, the first of many Rick James albums I would own.
As I write this, the recent news of Rick James's August 2004 death has saddened music fans worldwide. Unfortunately, the media still prefers to publicize the man's personal problems rather than celebrate the funky grooves to which he treated us. Here's hoping James's music will outlast the words of those idiots.
And maybe the untimely death will lead to COLD BLOODED's reissue, as the only Rick James titles that seem to be available are hits collections. Along with the aforementioned "U Bring The Freak Out," COLD BLOODED features freaky, funky numbers such as the "P.I.M.P. The S.I.M.P.," "New York Town," "Cold Blooded," and the classic duet with Smokey Robinson, "Ebony Eyes."
I have every Rick James album except FIRE IT UP and GARDEN OF LOVE. Those aside, I recommend these James titles to the curious: COME GET IT; STREET SONGS; THROW DOWN; GLOW; THE FLAG; URBAN RAPSODY; and, of course, COLD BLOODED.
Long live the music of Rick James.

"Rick had his ups & downs concerning his music as you may read in many articles written by the common critic on the web. An example would be the trashing he received for the "Garden Of Love" album, which was coined "a corny, ballad ridden disaster" by one source for which I won't mention. It's called diversity people. At any rate, "Cold Blooded" was similar review wise. I recently bought the vinyl and after witnessing the chronological order of his releases, I must say I was (am) impressed! It's still Rick (unlike "wonderful") plus a little help from a drum machine with a lot of cool guests like Smokey and Billy D. (Williams that is) I just can't help but wonder what Motown's issue is with re-releasing allot of these classic albums. I guess the money is in the cheap "best of" discs that aren't even true to the original cuts. At any rate, great album and on a personal note, sounds better on vinyl! Plus, who wants to spend $130 for a cd anyway!
P.S. J. L LaRegina, after reading your review of "Cold Blooded" I'd like you to know I have "Garden" and "Fire It Up" on cd from vinyl if you'd like to trade! Post reply"
