Synopsis

Product Description
Ex-Television and Rocket from the Tombs guitarist and frequent Matthew Sweet collaborator RICHARD LLOYD will have his new album, The Jaime Neverts Story, released by Parasol Records on September 1st, 2009. The Jamie Neverts Story is Richard s long-awaited collection of Jimi Hendrix covers recorded in early 2008. As much a homage to Jimi as it is to Lloyd's and Hendrix's mutual friend Velvert Turner (R.I.P.), the involved story behind this release touches on punches thrown, tears shed and three men whose guitar alchemy has shaped and continues to shape rock music ever since. The tale outlined in the liner notes is integral to understanding the album, although Lloyd's guitar wizardry certainly stands alone! To capture the special essence of Jimi Hendrix's playing Richard had to lay down some ground rules; simply put and in his own words: 'No more than three guitars on any track. No effects pedals, no fuzz box, no Octavia, no Wahwah pedal, no feedback, nothing backwards. Just Stratocaster guitars into Supro and Magnatone amplifiers'. For recording Richard was joined by bassist Keith Hartel and longtime Lloyd session drummer Chris Purdy, with a special guest appearance by Television drummer Billy Ficca. This is Lloyd's third release for Parasol and we re astounded to be working with one of Punk's true godfathers.

CD Reviews

Curious step worth following

(4 out of 5 stars)

"I adore Richard Lloyd's music and playing, from way back when with Television, through his days playing with Matthew Sweet, his work with Bibi Farber, Rocket from the Tombs (redux), and most especially his solo records which don't seem to me to get nearly the attention they deserve. This very obscurely titled disc is Lloyd's take on Jimi and is a curious step. Part homage, part night at the covers' bar, it is lovingly conceived and played, (nearly) adequately sung - only now and then a Lloyd strong suit, and the liners make fascinating reading (as well as explaining the title), but Lloyd doesn't really attempt to reimagine these songs or offer a new take on them. It is a good listen and, as ever, you'll sigh contentedly at his amazing guitar work, but for myself, I'd have rather had a new album of originals or heard him take these apart and reassemble them in his own image. Still, worth it for Richard's and Jimi's fans."
