Synopsis

Album Description
Richard Elliot is one of the brightest stars in the smooth jazz galaxy. While working with the seminal jazz powerhouse group, Tower of Power, Richard made his solo debut in 1986 with TROLLTOWN! The saxo-phonist put out records with modest expectations and harbored no grand illusions that it would lead to a solo career. With his third album POWER OF SUGGESTION, a group of radio stations that played instrumental pop music sprouted across the U.S. and Richard instantly became a format star with his classic rendition of "When A Man Loves A Woman" taken from the TAKE TO THE SKIES set. The saxophonist blew into the nineties with several releases that sold over 100,000 units. He landed his fourth #1 album with 1997's JUMPIN' OFF, legitimizing King Richard's claim to the New Adult Contemporary (NAC) throne. THE BEST OF RICHARD ELLIOTT features 15 tracks taken from eight top-selling Smooth Jazz albums.

CD Reviews

THE ORIGINAL IS STILL THE BEST!
Raymond D. Istorico | Sarasota, FL. United States | 12/27/2000
(4 out of 5 stars)

"Jazz Critics (and music critics in general) like to dismiss Elliot as indistinguishable from Boney James and Paul Taylor but Elliot was creating fat, foot-stomping sounds on his sax long before the current crop of contemporary "jazz" horn blowers. It is not that Elliot creates lines that other saxophone players CAN'T play, but rather, he makes big muscular melodies (mostly on tenor) that other saxophonists, usually, DON'T play. He is the saxophone equivalent of a guitar hero, wielding those big, soaring tones. This CD is a good overview of most of his efforts. Though Over The Rainbow (why not include Movers and Shakers instead?) as well as the three closing tracks are weak, there is a lot of great material here. Highlights (at least for this listener) include: Street Beat, When a Man Loves a Woman, Take Your Time, Candlelight, and The Power of Suggestion."
Not his best

"I am a huge Richard Elliot fan, owning 12 of his cd's, but if you are looking to purchase a cd by him I would not recommend this one. It has good music on it but his other titles: Chill Factor, On the Town, Crush, and his newest Ricochet are much more enjoyable and you would be better off owning one of those titles."
THE BEST???

"Richard Elliot is a great musician with a distinguishable record of great albums, but to call this THE BEST, Well...not exactly. There is such a long list of much better tracks that would really make it worth calling it Richard's best. C'mon, Richard, you know you can do better than this!!!"
