Album Description Ricardo "Richie" Ray is a consistent and highly praised bandleader, composer, arranger and virtuoso pianist from the golden age of Salsa. Before the 1970's, however, Ray was considered one of the pioneers who created a style known as "boogaloo." Se Soltó/On The Loose was Ray's first album with Alegre records, and remains one of the most important work tracing the history of "boogaloo." Joined by his life-long partner Bobby Cruz (singing in English and Spanish), they experimented with R&B/Latin fusion.A standout is "Danzon Bugaloo," where elements of traditional Cuban Danzón are mixed with sections of "Whipped Cream" by Herb Alpert and the Tijuana Brass. It is with this song that Ray prominently announced the debut and recognition of a new Latin dance/rhythm known as "boogaloo," and created a historical bridge that linked Latin and African-American music styles. A historically important album that still makes people dance.
