In the 1970's, piano player Ricardo `Richie' Ray and vocalist Bobby Cruz became one of the most famous pairings of the golden age of Salsa. In 1974, after several successful albums together, their relationship was temporarily strained. Ray suffered intense emotional problems. He changed his life by becoming a born-again Christian. At first, Cruz refused to accept Ray's change, but within four months Cruz himself became a convert. Reconstruction (their ninth) was their 1976 comeback! The album went gold and included their smash Merengue smash hit single "Juan En La Ciudad," which they co-wrote. All of the songs are centered on religious themes and messages.Their lifestyle changes had no adverse effect on their career, or the support of the public, because they continued to deliver hard and sophisticated Salsa.
