CD Reviews

Pure dub reggae at it's early 1980s best

"This cd has a great groove - like one of the other reviewers mentioned, it's great for cruising with a date...
The Ruts were a great punk band that did a few reggae songs. After the lead singer dies they became the Ruts DC and made this wicked album. THe first track, whatever we do is scortching reggae, Militan has a great paino motif behind the dub while there's also the odd funky track. Actually, the second disc, remixed by Zion train is my fave. Sounds more modern while still retaining the feel that comes with the best late 1970s dub reggae. Snatches of trumpets, deep base and great melodies."
After all these years...

"I can't speak for the "Deluxe" added second disk, but I will tell you that I have LONG coveted a re-release of this collection of some of the most excellent chilly dub that I wore out the tape of years ago, cruising through the coastal southeast on a date or better yet with the windows down to share with anyone willing to listen, this tape was annual standard summer fare for me and I have found none better. Try also 21st Century Dub, a completely hit -or -miss Japanese release on the same label for more fascinating stuff, backed by an all-star collection of Tuff Gong artists and more melodic and exploratory than some. The stories of both these collections is pretty crazy too; look it up as it's too much to write here. I used to be a pseudo-Reggae DJ so they (Roir) shipped me promo copies which I faithfully played the hell out of. Thanks for making it available, whoever you are."
