CD Reviews

For anime fans and adventurous music fans alike . . .

"As an import, it's a bit pricey, but it may be worth it. Shoujo Kakumei Utena is not your average anime series, and that is reflected in this soundtrack. With its unique sound, this is a refreshing change from the poppy love ballads of many shoujo anime soundtracks. Ranging from pretty instrumental music to the oddly catchy, chorus-esque "duel songs" (my personal favorites), this is one anime soundtrack with music that can actually stand on its own. Fans of Utena, of course, should especially look into this album."
An Revolution in the Evolution of Anime Soundtracks

"This is great music, folks. Even if you aren't familiar with the series, it's great music. There's a good blend of upbeat tracks such as the theme song (Rinbu Revolution),Truth, and some of the duel songs, beautiful pseudo-symphonic tracks like The Sunlit Garden and She's Elegant, and STRANGE music, which is still great to listen to, like Inhabitants of Planet Kashira or Duellists. Lovers of any style will find a favorite here..whether it be classical, smooth jazz, rock, experimental jazz, j-pop...rap fans may be a little left out.
But it goes deeper than that. Revolution speaks of Utena's high ideals, Scarlet of the Campus and Lyric of the Campus tell of her boldness and confidence, and Truth of her desire to break through the mysteries of the Rose Seal. When, Who, Where, Which? speaks of the rebirth of hope within the Rose Bride; Spira Mirabilis Theater tells of us Miki's genius and the emptiness he tried to fill with the Rose Bride..Angelic Creation, Namely Light speaks of Juri's dual nature, and is easily the best track on the disc. Fans of the series, fans of music in general, will NOT be disappointed."
Excellent CD, even if you have never seen the series before

"I thought this CD was so expensive that I wouldn't buy it if it weren't that I am a huge fan of Utena. But I was wrong! The music is great!! Absolutely one of my favorite CD, if not the favorite.... You can listen to it over and over again and not get tired of it...that's the power of classical music. "The sunlit garden" (The Sunny Garden?), is simply gorgeous. And "overture" has such profound effect.... "Eros of the Ball" (waltz style) is so beautiful. Even "The Sunny Garden: Illusion," which is basically sunny garden with symphony, is great. Ok, so I am a fan of classical music but songs with lyrics here are also extraordinary. They are catchy, though in Japanese. Even if you have never seen the series or you are not a big fan of classical music, you can still enjoy it. Just be aware that there are a lot of pirated goods out there. It is very difficult now to get official CDs of Utena, which have total 9 albums, since they are ALL out of print in Japan. Actually, it's cheaper to buy it from Japan even with shipping and handling fee. I don't know why they are so expensive when imported to US. I managed to get 6 out of 9 albums and they are worth every penny of it!!!!"
