"
Well-noted for playing the Double Bass as easily as some musicians play the guitar, Ray Brown demonstrates his chops on the smaller, higher-pitched (and often more difficult) violoncello. This CD reissue offers an array of familiar standards played by what at times sounds like an acoustic bass guitar. The master Bullfiddler plays his "Calf" fiddle with equal brilliance. One can only imagine why Brown--as well as other double bass players--did not make more recordings with this splendid instrument. From the tender, languid "BUT BEAUTIFUL" to Cole Porter's snapping "ROSALIE", this recording is an easy listen from start to finish. Brown's JAZZ CELLO should satisfy Jazz and non-Jazz lovers alike."
Needed variety

"I purchased this as a gift to encourage a very young cellist, so that he could see that cello is capable of jazz as well as classics. I wanted him to appreciate the variety possible, and also to see a man of color playing the cello.
The family tells me that it is enjoied by the whole family, not just him, but that he definitely listens to it, so it achieved my goal of letting him find out more about the variety of the cello, and also to give them all some new listening pleasure!"
