Nice but not up to par

"Listen to Ray Anthony's Dream Dancing 2 or Miller Mood
and you'll see this one doesn't compare. I'm still waiting
for another release that matches the quality of these.
I must admit the Christmas album does, but it's seasonal."
An Issue Of Sound Dimensions

"I have listened to several Ray Anthony albums, owning 8. My issue with this one is one of sound dimension. Ray's trumpet is miked far too loudly, and this is a liability for his unique and matured style. Because Ray likes to vary from a more lyrical note style, rising above and dropping below true pitch, and because he uses a lot of vibrato here, the effect is overkill with the heavy miking. Compare this to Dream Dancing IV, where everything is more in balance with miking. In this earlier recording, Ray is loud enough, but his tone sounds more clear because it is not so heavily miked. In Dream Dancing IV, Ray also uses more control in the vibrato, and sticks more to the lyrical note style mentioned above. In my opinion, sound technology can either enhance or impinge the efforts of musicians. I hope that Ray will read this."
