CD ReviewsDEFINITELY WORTHY Alfredo R. Villanueva | New York, NY United States | 02/05/2008 (4 out of 5 stars) "THIS WORLD FIRST RECORDING OF MASCAGNI'S THIRD OPERA BELONGS IN EVERY VERISMO LOVER'S COLLECTION. THE PLOT CONCERNS A FEUD BETWEEN TWO BROTHERS; MEANWHILE THEIR CHILDREN ARE MADLY IN LOVE WITH EACH OTHER. LOVE TRIUMPHS IN THE END. EXCELLENT SOUND AND NOTES. THE MALE LEADS ARE OUTSTANDING, PARTICULARLY BARRY ANDERSON, WHO REMINDS ME OF TITO GOBBI, AND OTTAVIO GARAVENTA. THE ONE WEAK SPOT BELONGS TO RITA LANTIERI. HER ACID, REEDY AND TREMULOUS SOPRANO IS SIMPLY NOT SUITED FOR VERISMO ROLES--SHE RUINED "ZANETTO" FOR ME, AND IS ONLY MARGINALLY BETTER HERE. I HAVE ALWAYS MARVELLED AT MASCAGNI'S MASTERFUL BLENDING OF WORDS AND MUSIC, CREATING A KIND OF "MUSICAL PROSE," AS ALBERTO PALOSCIA COMMENTS IN HIS EXCELLENT INTRODUCTION TO THE OPERA."
