Synopsis

Album Description
Rameau was one of the great composers for the keyboard. But because pianists have not adopted his harpsichord music as they have that of the other great names of the Baroque - Bach, Handel, and Scarlatti - his stature as a keyboard composer is not fully acknowledged. This series of three CDs presents all his keyboard music on the piano: the familiar suites, a number of discoveries, and arrangements by his contemporaries and later composers. London-born Stephen Gutman has earned a reputation as one of Britain's most creative performers of modern music; he has also made a specialty of interpreting French Baroque keyboard repertoire on the modern piano. He has performed and been broadcast widely in Europe, Japan, Australia, and the US. Also active as a chamber musician, Stephen Gutman has appeared in concerts and broadcasts with many distinguished international artists and ensembles. In 1999, Gutman commissioned twelve British composers to write pieces mirroring the works of Rameau. This project, entitled Les Enfants de Rameau and modeled on variations by Dukas, received widespread critical acclaim.
