Synopsis

Product Description
The master tapes to this session have been locked way for the past 42 years in the family archives of Barbara Sutton Curtis, Ralph's sister. Most of his selections are tunes he had either never recorded or were only recorded once. Barbara, who had been listening to Ralph since the very beginning, feels that these are among the happiest, most swinging things she has ever heard him play. After hearing this CD I think you'll agree. What a talent Ralph was! He played wondrous piano and he is sadly missed. ~ Hal Curtis, Ralph's brother-in-law.

CD Reviews

Great Ralph Sutton
B. D. Tutt | London, UK. | 09/15/2003
(5 out of 5 stars)

"This CD provides something for jazz piano fans to savour - 73 minutes of previously unreleased performances by Ralph Sutton. As the CD title suggests, these are private family recordings from 1961, made at "The Colonel's Ranch Wagon", a restaurant / bar in Marin County California. Sutton is in something close to top form, and the rather superfluous drum accompaniment of Hugh Clegg is appropriately unobtrusive. Standout tracks include lively readings of "Lulu's Back in Town" and "`S Wonderful" and a beautifully swinging rendition of "I Ain't Got Nobody".Two factors make this a particularly valuable re-issue. One is that very little Sutton from this period is currently available on CD. Second, the tunes on this CD (with the exception of Waller's "Alligator Crawl" and the standard "Everything Happens To Me") were not amongst the much repeated staples of Sutton's later years. The CD suffers from a couple of the drawbacks of many live recordings: some background noise and a slightly out of tune piano. Nevertheless, the quality of the performances more than compensates for this. For the many fans of Sutton, the fact that the net proceeds of this CD will go towards the Ralph Sutton Memorial Fund is another incentive to purchase this release. Recommended."
