The Raincoats rock!
evoke@subdimension.com | Sydney, Australia | 10/17/2000
(5 out of 5 stars)

"Aggressive, rebellious, moody, beautiful, sexy! Jagged guitar mixed with haunting violins, soft beautiful female vocals mixed with harsh scratchy talking, sometimes crazy, sometimes eccentric, always hypnotising.. The Raincoats influenced a new style of rock, one of those groups that from the first time you hear them you are hooked. This album is no exception. The songs are so difficult to describe! Just when you think you have it figured, the whole rhythm and mood change. "Shouting Out Loud" starts out with pretty harmonic vocals with an almost tribal percussion, but then swings into trumpets and violins with an almost symphonic feel. I like "No One's Little Girl", it is very catchy and groovy. Funky! Great drums, and the bass is very prominent.. makes you want to chair-dance! Hmmm, if you're into indie, you'll love it.."
Don't start with this...

"I picked this up on CD after I listened to the band's earlier releases, "The Raincoats","Odyshape","Moving" and "The Kitchen Tapes"; it didn't impress me. Note the absence of Vicky Aspinell, who I feel was an essential part of the Raincoats in their early years. The gal's voices don't sound as great as they did on their previous albums. Gina's voice grated on my nerves after the first track. The last two tracks are from back in the day. Raincoats' classics! I would say, pick this one up after you have listened to their earlier releases. Maybe then you'll share a similar opinion!"
