Blackmore at his best

"I was extatic to see this release. there are 3 shows from germany and all three are fairly different. buyer should note that material from both the 'On Stage' and 'live in 1976' albums are on these discs. that being said, the remixed shows give more depth to the music. each show is complete and unedited. it was fascinating to me to see how the band performed differently on different nights. the mood changes, variations in guitar intros and solos, and the ad-lib solo's from dio give the close listener a way to see how each artist had his own creative force during each show. this gives a very similar feel to 'live in japan' by deep purple; a 3 cd set of the different nights. i found this to be a real treat. the band sounds great. the closer 'do you close your eyes' disappointingly does not appear on the second set. bottom line:
buy this if:
1. you are a hardcore fan.
2. want to hear the shows the way they were actually played (note, 'on stage' edits/deletes parts of some songs and completely deleted stargazer; the songs are also out of order).
3. want to hear how the band played each show on a given night(note, 'live in 1976' gives the correct order but switches nights to get the 'best' versions on to one double disc).
don't buy if:
1. you are just getting into the band (my suggestion would be to try out 'live in 1976' first and go from there).
2. if you want to hear 'long live rock and roll' played live instead of stargazer (get live in 1977).
hope this is helpful, Burrn!"

"Experienced Rainbow collectors will notice the subtle differences in Blackmore's playing and Dio's singing from night-to-night. However, this is a pretty high price to pay for nice packaging of what amounts to 1 show played 3 times. The sound and mini-gatefold lps are very nice, but at $30-$40 per show depending on where you buy the set, even as a big fan of the Dio-era Rainbow, this is a tough purchase to justify. I would recommend to the casual Rainbow fan tracking down the Germany 1976 2-CD release that was issued about 20 years back, or buy one of the new issues individually. (Either the 25th or 28th as the 27th did not get the encore of Do You Close Your Eyes?) If you are a big fan of the Joe Lynn Turner era of Rainbow, this set is defiitely not for you."

"If you love Blackmore & you love Rainbow you must have this package, the sound is outstanding its "Classic" Rainbow. The packaging alone is worth it. If you liked Rainbow Live you will LOVE this. I hope somewhere there is some video of these shows lying around."

"It's about time this music has seen the light of day! This line up Rainbow is by far the CLASSIC! Blackmore/Dio/Powell/Bain/Carey deliver, and deliver hard! 3 great shows, and athough pretty much the same setlist, each show has its special moments, and it is well documented you never know what kind of night your in for with Ritchie, whether he's in a mood or not, Blackmore never seems to disappoint. Each show varies, but Ritchie simply rocks! Ronnie, whom i consider one of metals best vocalists sounds fresh and in command. what can be said of Cozy Powell that hasn't already been said, just a great rock drummer! This boxset is a MUST for any fan of Rainbow, hardcore fan or not! it took 30 years to see these shows released complete, well worth the wait...it is a shame us die-hards had to wait this long, but now we have it to enjoy forever! Rainbow rules!!!"

"Simply a must for any Dio or Blackmore fan. Both are in their prime here. Ronnie's vocals are strong and unwavering. While Richie is free to just go where his mood takes him. Dusseldorf is without a doubt in my mind the best sounding of the three shows. But it is missing Do you close eys at the end. Makes me wonder why it was left off or did they cut the show short that night? I have had songs from all three shows from other live releases. It is extremely nice to have these shows complete for the first time. If you are a fan you just can't go wrong. If you are just discovering this severly underrated band get Live On Stage first. If you love it then do yourself a favor spend the money on this set!!"
