Nice sidenote

(3 out of 5 stars)

"While TV on the Radio clearly remain the primary topic here, Rain Machine is a nice little offshoot where we get to hear one layer of the aforementioned band isolated from the other voices, and basically unplugged. As if to further drive this home, parts of this album go out on a limb with a couple of extended segments of Dylanesque flawed-vocal-and-flattop. These are the parts where Kyp is naked and the listener is prone to feel awkward about that and perhaps be chased off. However, after a few extra spins and some attention paid to the lyrics in these parts, it's not hard to see he has designed a nice theme, whereby he doubts the power of love and later regains his faith in the power of love. It sounds cheesy for me to say that, but I think he really means it, and that is what helps me swallow down those parts.

The majority of this album is comprised of beutiful melodicaly driven songs with a folksy texture but more of a freak-folk lyrical content. The "Give Blood" single is a little deceiving, as it is the only song with distorted guitar textures, although the rest of the album does stand well enough on it's own. There are no clear electronic textures at all (that I have picked up on). There is a lot of content here, and a rich development of a mood, which ensures this is a keeper in my collection."
