The Vespers and The Liturgy come alive
Eric S. Kim | Southern California | 04/20/2006
(5 out of 5 stars)

"Yevhen Savchuk gives us an extraordinary rendition of Vespers (All-Night Vigil), while Valery Polyansky gives us a strongly emotional interpretation of The Liturgy of St. John Chrysostom.

Savchuk somewhat speeds up the pace, but it still doesn't seem rushed. He doesn't lose the tension and he doesn't lose control of the National Academic Choir of Ukraine. The speed doesn't mess up the entire work. It still sounds like Rachmaninov's Vespers. As for the singing, it is very beautiful. The choir is in top form, filling their voices with dedication and splendor. The soloists also do a good job. (It should be noted that the choir performs the entire work a half step higher, giving the Russian Chant more grace and less darkness.)

Polyansky gives us a longer and slower Liturgy of St. John Chrysostom. Again, the conductor doesn't lose tension and doesn't lose control of the Russian State Symphony Cappella. He does a fantastic job of making us listen to the lyrical details that other conductors have left out when they sped up the tempi. It's a magnificent piece of work, and the fillers (Panteley the Healer/Chorus of spirits for Don Juan/O mother of God vigilantly praying) sound fresh and enchanting.

All in all, try these renditions of Rachmaninov's music of the Orthodox Church. And also try the renditions from the Cambridge King's College Boys' Choir on EMI. They are well-crafted and very good to listen to."
