The Best Recital

"This is the best recital of Rachmaninov's solo piano music I have ever heard (and I have heard a few...). Kocsis' technical address is a wonder as is his musicianship. His interpretation of the 2nd Sonata (the original version) is volcanic. Only Horowitz played it with this kind of energy. The rest of the recital is very special; in a class by itself. Also, until recently, this recording was available only as a hard to find import. Find out why Gramophone and the Penguin Guide gave it their highest recommendation. Small hint: this recording is available in the set called "Ultimate Rachmaninov" from Decca, which also includes Kocsis' fine set of piano concertos. That set is 5 CDs for less than the price of one."
