"People who love the pianism of Wilhelm Kempff value its light touch, avoidance of all virtuosic show, and almost casually improvised freshness. These qualities are much in evidence in these readings from the mid-Fifties of two Schumann masterpieces, the Fantasy in C and the Symphonic Etudes. Both works are normally played tempestuously, with grandstanding poeticism. Kempff is modest and tender instead and makes these pieces sound like intimate Chopin. He has an unerring touch for phrasing--every melodic line feels like a romance.
For these reasons I was enchanted by this CD, despsite the tubby, cramped mono sound. Kempff has never been a particular favorite of mine (Richter is my ideal, and he is hte anti-Richter), but It's impossible to deny the masterful musicianship that inspires his playing here."
