Four quartets worth hearing and re-hearing

"This disc contains four short quartets written in a style that, even for the first two decades of the twentieth century, is conservative. But these are some of the most engaging, well-crafted, and delightful American quartets that I have heard. Porter's writing is inventive and idiomatic and shows both a strong melodic gift and a pleasing sense of humor. His music repays repeated listening. The playing is first rate, as is the recording. I hope that Naxos will release the rest of Porter's string quartets and his marvelous violin sonata in the near future."
