CD Reviews

Pure Drama is ON THE RISE!
Clarissa | Ontario, California | 07/19/2002
(4 out of 5 stars)

"This album took me by utter surprise! I liked it a lot more than initially hoped... The industrial darkwave of "The Time You've Spent" and "Minute Holiday" are my personal favorites on here with soaring vocals that sometimes remind me of Mors Syphilitica by the enchanting Shari Valenta and Becca Gomez. The song that comes the closest to sounding mainstream, though, is probably "On The Surface" and "Paused" which both feature the vocals of Ryan Policky and both have a gothic new wave sound, while the female songs sound more like edgy synth-pop. What originally got me into Pure Drama was my accidental downloading of their song, "Deeper Sense". At first I was mad that I had downloaded the wrong thing but after hearing it I instantly feel in love with its hard-edged trip-hop luster with equally demanding vocals. I notice that Pure Drama gets compared a lot to Hooverphonic but with that I would have to disagree for they have their own distinct sound that should not be reckoned with. Pure Drama's ON THE SURFACE has made me an official fan of their music, and I guarantee that it will with you too if you just give them a chance. If you like this type of music than you won't be disappointed! I promise."
Remarkable Trip Hop!

"Has a tinge of Lamb and Esthero, yet it's unique unlike most in this category. Ryan and Becca were meant to sing with each other and the tracks on this disc prove it. "The Time You've Spent" is by far the best track on the disc, and is worth the cost alone. If you're at all into ethereal trance, ambient breakbeat, or progressive EBM, drop down some cash on this. It's well worth it!!!!"
