Last, at long last, Muti's Sinfonietta, and more - Halleluja

"I bought this 2 disk bargain priced offering almost entriely to get my hands on the Muti recording of the Sinfonietta, one of the truly under-appreciated works of Prokofiev. Muti's recording originally occupied the fourth side of the 2 LP set that featured Muti's award-winning rendition of the Stasevich adaptation as an oratorio of Prokofiev's "Ivan the Terrible" film music. Both recorded in 1978, the oratorio has been available in CD form at mid-price or lower for over twenty years. To my recollection though this is the first CD release of the Sinfonietta, and it is long overdue. I have endured Jarvi's uninspired Chandos recording as the only choice for the Sinfonietta for years, and none of the few other recordings made since that Chandos recording have been significantly better. Perhaps with Muti's fine performance in circulation again this forgotten treasure can see the light of day again.

The equally fine recording of the Classical Symphony with Efrem Kurtz makes the set a clear high recommendation for any collection, even those not bent on having a large Prokofiev library but just getting some of his music."
