LIGHTNING FLASH & THUNDER ROLL
Locks Lion | Blue Mountain Peak | 10/28/2005
(4 out of 5 stars)

"SILVER & GOLD: This is another strong collection from DJ Prince Far I - the man appropriately known as the Voice Of Thunder - and the first to be issued by the ever-reliable Blood & Fire label. Fellow UK-based reissue specialists, Pressure Sounds, have several Far I titles in their catalogue, but the Blood & Fire crew has diligently avoided any overlap and put together a first class collection of storming DJ versions; Steve Barrow's excellent liner notes even go so far as to "unreservedly" recommend the aforementioned Pressure Sounds releases.

Renowned for his commanding voice, SILVER & GOLD features Far I rumbling over a variety of roots rhythms, notably The Slickers' classic, JOHNNY TOO BAD (JOHNNY GET WORSE) and Little Roy's timeless TRIBAL WAR (NO MORE WAR and WAR IS OVER). There are also a number of the Prince's productions for Errol Holt (later to play bass for the legendary Roots Radics band), including an extended mix of YES, YES, YES, Holt's simmering reinterpretation of Dawn Penn's NO, NO, NO. All this adds up to a near-essential selection of prime roots reggae and another job-well-done for the folks at Blood & Fire.

"This is a cd for the seasoned Prince Far I listener. Blood & Fire have collected super-duper-ultra rare Far I tracks, and cleaned them up beautifully. This disc shows a range of things, including a few dubs, many toasts, and a couple of things produced by Far I. However, this disc is not a good introduction to the prince, as it does not really contain any of his greatest toasts, but interesting, if not quite essential stuff for those of us who are already fans.

Prince Far I discs for those just starting out? Well, there is "Dubwise" featuring many of the most amazing, trippy Far I dubs, as well as three of his absolute best toasts. As far as albums of just toasts, there are many, some of the best being "Heavy Manners," "UNDER Heavy Manners," and "Long Life." "Health And Strength" on Pressure Sounds is another good one, but is not on this site as of this writing.

Happy listening."
