"Preservation Hall in New Orleans - home of the Preservation Hall Jazz Band - miraculously survived Hurricane Katrina in 2005 but many of the musicians were displaced. I've highly recommended the beautifully recorded CDs - with their handcrafted packaging - produced by Ben Jaffe, son of the PHJB founder Allan Jaffe. The band was in the middle of new sessions when Katrina hit and the disc was never completed. When the younger Jaffe returned to NOLA he discovered the master tapes were saved. To celebrate this he has produced one of the most original jazz releases this year. Made in New Orleans: The Hurricane Sessions is a cardboard box containing, not only a CD with the '05 sessions and some archival recordings, and a 31-minute DVD with great rare newsreel and performance footage at the Hall from a German film crew (PLUS an appearance at the Newport Jazz Fest) , but a whole array of reproduced memorabilia - different items in each box. A most unique tribute to a legendary American jazz institution.
