Album DescriptionEric Le Lann and Martial Solal know each other from a long time ago. Indeed Eric recorded his best album in 1990 based on arrangements by Martial, and one could say that they have always avoided known paths. They both have elegance and fluency to give, that is why they just ignore simplicity. At this stage who would have guessed that the pianist would turn out to be a virtuoso of wrong-footing and the element of surprise? However, even knowing that Eric Le Lann has a huge talent, one could not imagine that this trumpeter is able to forget about conventions to the point of conceiving each improvisation as a transfiguration of melody, and as an appropriation of spaces cleared by others, that he relocates in virgin lands and intimate spaces. On Portrait In Black And White, recorded in the Festival of Vannes, it's hard to find a note in the whole concert that was expected!
