Synopsis

The current issue of Schwann Opus lists over 40 versions of Gustav Holst's singular masterpiece The Planets. This is but another version, except that the disc companion is a quirky and alchemic Arcana (1927) of Varése. It is a peculiar lead-in to The Planets, mostly because of its atonal statements. But Varése and Holst were near-contemporaries, and these works almost parallel one another. One is atonal and abrasive; the other is colorful and dynamic. The Planets is very much controlled; Arcana gives the appearance of being improvisational where it obviously is not. Slatkin's take on both these works is quite good. --Paul Cook

A Hybrid That's Not For Everyone
Neil Cotiaux | North Canton, Ohio United States | 12/02/2001
(4 out of 5 stars)

"As a lover of both mainstream and avante-garde music, I purchased this particular treatment of "The Planets" expressly because "Arcana" was the companion piece. Slatkin and The Philharmonia do complete justice to both, with ample fire, majesty, and ethereal quality where called for in Holst's grand work.Bottom line: if you don't know Varese, or aren't a fan of avante-garde, you'll probably want to steer clear of this coupling in favor of a more traditional marriage."
