CD ReviewsNot a 'must-have' Brett J. Lalonde | Columbus, OH | 07/01/2003 (3 out of 5 stars) "This album, although it is the renowned "Purple Tape" that launched the Pixies' career, it is not an essential. Each track, other than Rock A My Soul, has been released previously, and the versions of each song found on this cd a fairly similar to the previously released versions. I'm not bashing the cd, because it is a good cd, there's just nothing really new on the album. I gave it 3 stars because it's not as good as the other pixies albums. If you have every other pixies cd, get this one only to complete your collection, but not so you can hear some exciting new material." I love the Pixies but.... x_bruce | Oak Park, ILLINOIS United States | 09/20/2002 (3 out of 5 stars) "Although interesting Pixies is far from essential. Short even by EP standards these recordings don't really shed light on what the Pixies created. It seems a cynical marketing department chance to cash in on old fans and those curious about the band that inspired so many modern rockers and punk bands.Pass on this and get any of the original studio releases, they will be much better choices. For completists only..." Essential for the Pixies fan Dan | Melbourne, VIC, Australia | 03/06/2003 (5 out of 5 stars) "If you are a hardcore Pixies fan, you have gotta get this EP. This is the other half of the recording that became 'Come on Pilgrim' so it is 86/87 vintage. Forget all the other 'used cars' out there like 'Death to the Pixies' and 'Complete B-Sides'. Chances are you already have them anyway. What makes this album great is it gives you an insight into how the band developed their songs over (sometimes) many years. For example, Subbacultcha only made it onto 91's TLM, but was evidently floating around many years before. Same for 'Down to the Well' and 'Here Comes Your Man'. If, like me, you think HCYM is one of the Pixies best ever songs you will be smitten by the original version. It is haunting and so tantalisingly close to the original, yet different at the same time, I am sure it will blow you away. As others have said, 'Subbacultcha' has elements of 'Distance Equals Rate Times Time' in the chorus (they sing "We're having good fuuuun" as opposed to "From looking into the Suuuun"). This Album also answers a few puzzles that I had in my head from listening to live bootlegs out there. For example, how was it that 88 recordings featured 'down to the well' (1990), and why did FB sing some of the lyrics in reverse order to those on the albums. He was singing the original versions. One bit of trivia is my UK import has 'The Pixies' instead of 'Pixies' on it. Surely everyone knows they were always just 'Pixies'???In any case, you wont regret buying this. No Way.Highest Recommendation."
