Product DescriptionElizabeth McNutt, extraordinary flutist, interacts with a computer in performance. It's as if she asks: How can a traditional instrument interact with technology? And in this CD, with its diverse approaches and distinctive sounds, she provides many answers. The music is by Andrew May, Cort Lippe, Eric Lyon, Barry Moon, and Philippe Manoury, and the compositions are distinct in process and sound. Andrew May's 'The Twittering Machine' (1995) is an improvisational duet between flute and computer in which "the computer acts as an invisible chorus, shadowing and vying with the soloist's gestures." Cort Lippe's 'Music for Flute and Computer' (1994) is a drama of conversation, in which a sound-sensitive computer tracks the flute sounds and responds accordingly. Eric Lyon's 'The Blistering Price of Power' (1993), with its recorded sounds ranging from electronics to simple synth-pop grooves to fanciful fife-like cadenzas, extends the flute in a colorful challenge. Barry Moon's 'Interact I' (1996) is a spare and fascinating texture of strange and beautiful sounds, created enitrely by flute and computer interactions. Philippe Manoury's 'Jupiter' (1987), one of the early classics of instrument/computer combinations, pioneered the concept of score-following to synchronize live electronics with a live performer.
