CD Reviews

Strong debut from a band that would get even better!

"I'm a major Pink Cream 69 fan, and have all of their albums, but it's pretty rare that I go back and listen to the band's 1989 self-titled debut. Part of that is due to the fact that I discovered PC69 after David Readman had come on board as vocalist, and it's hard for me to accept anything other than his electrifying voice at the mic. It's also hard for me to hear an album with Andi Deris on vocals and not think Helloween.

It may not be the PC69 I'm accustomed to, but it's still a very solid album, and it's obvious that the key elements of the band's sound were firmly in place from the very beginning. It has all of the monster guitar hooks and incredible melodies I've come to expect from PC69, and if it's a bit less heavy than the band's later albums, that's understandable. It was 1989 after all, and the hair metal movement was in full effect. You can't throw this album in with the Hollywood hair scene though. It's a closer match to the classier, more melodic European rock that bands like Bonfire, Pretty Maids, and Treat were releasing at the time. Andi Deris's vocals give the album a definite Euro-metal flair. He's a fine singer, but I'm glad he went on to join Helloween, since he was much better suited for that kind of music, just as David Readman sounds like he was born to sing for Pink Cream 69.

In terms of songwriting, production and musicianship, this album is not at the same level as PC69's later efforts, but it's still a very respectable debut from a band that has become one of the major players in the melodic hard rock scene. If you're a fan of Pink Cream 69, you really can't skip this one. If you're new to the band, this probably isn't the best place to start. Pick up Electrified and give that a spin. After you've recovered, come back around and see what else the band has to offer. Trust me, by then you'll be a fan for life.

Awesome

"I originally heard their album 'One Size Fits All' and thought it was great, but I think this one is even stronger. The guitar leads are just wicked, on par with old Dokken solos and the songs are very catchy and powerful. But the main standout to me is the vocals; Andi Derris (now with Helloween) is monstrous. Incredible high range and with an awesome 'roughness' to his voice that most singers hitting those upper notes don't tend to have. It compliments this type of music perfectly. Check out 'One Step Into Paradise' on Youtube for a good example."
