Synopsis

This second volume in Jando's Beethoven sonata cycle contains three of the most popular: the Farewell, the Waldstein, and the Tempest. Beethoven's Farewell Sonata has three movements--departure, absence, and return--that perfectly capture the emotions that they express. The first movement had a powerful influence on Mahler's Ninth Symphony, which quotes it literally on several occasions. The Waldstein and Tempest Sonatas are in many respects quintessential Beethoven: passionate, turbulent, but always formally perfect. Jeno Jando's survey of Beethoven sonatas on Naxos has been extremely successful--much more so than several other pianists on more expensive, full-priced labels. His second volume isn't just a good deal for the money; it's a good deal, period. --David Hurwitz

CD Reviews

Good Deal for the money
12/30/1999
(4 out of 5 stars)

"I was impressed by Jendo Jando's playing. The only thing bad about this set was the fact the the track numbering on the cover of the CDs does not actually match the tracks on the CDs. At first that was a bit annoying but then you get used to it. 5 CDs for the money is a good deal, though, especially when the playing can compete with the full-priced sets. I would recomend this set to anyone."
A solid, recommendable set

"I bought the complete set of these sonatas in two Naxos boxes and listened to them all, in order, with a score in hand. These are straight, logical, buttoned-up performances and I recommend them no matter how many other recordings of these warhorses you already own. Stylistically, the performances are remarkably even and consistent from sonata to sonata. Jando's readings tend to be literal rather than expressive, fast rather than slow, loud rather than soft. He takes virtually every repeat. Reading along, I was constantly struck by how strictly Jando adheres to Beethoven's markings, especially the famous dotted and staccato rhythms. You are hearing more of Beethoven, and less of the pianist, than any other set I know. For instance, the last movement of the "Waldstein" is going to sound much more staccato, even "clipped." Seasoned listeners have been conditioned to expect a more legato sound. But it's written that way in the score, and that's how Jando plays it. And it works. While not quite to the level of the "giants" of the Beethoven playing school - Schnabel, Arrau, Goode, Kempff (I and II), etc, Jando's is a good, solid recommendable set. I'm glad I bought it and will return to it often. And the price is right!"
