It features 15 compositions never previously recorded including the earliest known piano composition by an African -American woman. The music moves through a variety of moods: reflective, joyful, energetic, and spans classical through popular styles. Women in Music History: Throughout the 19th and 20th centuries, the piano has been an expressive medium for the musical creativity of women composers. At the beginning of the 19th century, many women composers found that their gender and social status prevented their compositions from being publicly performed or published. Gradually, towards the end of the century, women composers found public venues for performances of their music. As the 20th century progressed, women composers were acknowledged as having voices that should be heard and their talents were recognized through public performances, commissions, and awards. Rhythms of the Seasons: The seasons and months of the year represent a theme that women composers have been drawn to throughout the past two centuries, perhaps because a woman's life is significantly influenced by cyclic events. One might associate music portraying the seasons with male composers such as Vivaldi and his famous violin concerti, "The Four Seasons", and the oratorio "The Seasons" by Haydn. The various styles and forms of music featured on "Piano Portraits of the Seasons" demonstrate that the seasonal theme transcends gender, historical and stylistic boundaries.« less

"The pianist's exquisite touch and her obvious affection for these seldom heard selections result in a CD of unusual charm and beauty. The unifying theme of the seasons and women composers is interesting, but incidental to the sheer beauty of these pieces as performed by Ms. Boyes, whose skill is apparent in every facet of her artistry. An excellent CD for lovers of the piano repertoire."

"In her debut CD, English pianist Katharine Boyes has achieved a wonderful balance between the sheer novelty of performing pieces composed solely by women and the pure enjoyment afforded by presenting us with music that would be deemed beautiful regardless of who composed it. I look forward to hearing more from this very accomplished artist."

"As the title suggests, this CD is the first of its kind, that I am aware of, that consists solely of music depicting the seasons that is solely written by women composers. This music is both relaxing and invigorating, and I would highly recommend it for every music lover's collection."

"Katherine Boyes's CD encompasses a world of music unknown to the average listener. The study of the seasons composed by women makes for an enjoyable CD that displays works never before seen. The often calming pieces can act as a wonderful focus or as soothing background music. Avid pianists will find her dynamics and technical performance perfect, while the average listener will enjoy the musical contrasts that she meticulously displays. Any listener will be swept away by the romance involved with these graceful pieces."
