"While I prefer most of my classical music in symphonic form, sometimes I like to hear the gentle, measured sound of a piano composition. Or maybe I'll want to listen to that classy 'n' jazzy Gershwin gem, Rhapsody in Blue, which combines both the sounds of a solo piano and the full majesty of a full orchestra. This collection covers pieces by Mozart, Grieg, Beethoven, Schumann, Tchaikovsky, and Rachmaninov. The performers include pianists Arthur Lima, Dubravka Tomsic, Svetlana Stancevka, as well as the renowned London Symphony Orchestra, Mozart Festival Orchestra, and the Ljubljana Radio Orchestra. Of the 10 compositions, my favorites are Mozart's Piano Concerto No. 21 in C major ("Elvira Madigan") K. 467 and Beethoven's Piano Sonata No. 14 in C sharp minor ("Moonlight"), Op. 27/2. While I enjoy the other eight selections -- and particularly the Gershwin and Schumann pieces, I tend to gravitate toward those two very romantic compositions from the Classical and Romantic eras."
