"This is a real bargain. First of all, the sound is rich and vivid. Secondly, Rattle is in fine form. The orchestra is lively and energetic, with the roughness of the Birmingham strings actually contributing to the beautifully etched effect. Vogt is a splended soloist. His tone as caught on the recording is not overly large, but he plays with a wealth of detail and a sparkling finger stroke. Much can be made of Glenn Gould's 1954 cadenzas in the First Concerto. They certainly sound as though from a later era than Beethoven, but they are well made and consistently interesting, certainly worth trotting out from time to time. My only reservation, and it is a slight one, is that the interpretations do not always attain the sublimity one finds, say, in the Fleisher/Szell collaboration. Nevertheless, for vigor and imagination, this is quite a find."
