An Unbelievable Value!

"Six dollars for a double album containing Tchaikovsky's Piano Concerto # 1 and his awe-inspiring Violin Concerto, both in entirely serviceable performances, would be exceptional in itself. But add in Shostakovitch's second piano Concerto (recently used in Fantasia 2000), the interesting "Varations on a Nursery Rhyme", and two other Tchaikovsky pieces, and it seems almost like stealing. I highly recommend this budget label (Seraphim) for high-quality performances and recordings, attractively packaged, at ridiculously low prices. It's a great way to begin a classical collection (although sooner or later you'll want to add a few "classic performances" as well)."

"I have just encountered this Tchaikovsky performance, on vinyl rather than CD (so I can't speak to the sound here) but as a performance it is excellent. Previn takes his typically rhythmic and light approach to the score, with lilting tempos on the quick side. Taking the war out of a warhorse isn't easy, but everything comes together wonderfully here for these two artists in their prime."
