CD Reviews

Piano Concerto #1 is Genius!!
07/08/1999

"Purchase this disc just for "Concerto for Piano and Trumpet." The first movement is highly intriguing with bizzarre dual tonality and key changes. The tragic Lento (II) is absolutely beautiful. It is almost as sad as Gorecki's Symphony #3!! This piece will please any fan of Shostakovich or classical music in general!"
The final cut makes it all worhwhile.

"About fourteen years ago, I saw two Russian movies at a theater in London (the Everyman in Hampstead to be exact). During the intermission, they played this CD (probably on tape back then). I only remember hearing the final cut (The Assault on Beautiful Gorky) and being absolutely mesmerized by it. I've never really listened to the rest of the CD, so I can only recommend the last piece. It's everything from haunting, epic, moving and above all, unforgettable. Just hearing it conjurs up stirring images of Ivan the Terrible or the Odessa steps."
Neglected masterpieces

"praise of the two concertos could not be shouted any louder than it has been for many years. the assault on beautiful gorky is
another story. this piece is not available on any recent release
for some strange reason. it is also a masterpiece. the liner notes indicate shostakovich wrote this piece for a movie and in the reviewers opinion it is the russian "warsaw concerto", in one movement."
