CD ReviewsIf you are a jazz fan, then please make this purchase! JoeyD | los gatos, ca | 07/11/2007 (5 out of 5 stars) "I feel very privileged to be the first to review this incredible debut recording from arguably one of the most underrated jazz pianists of all-time. I am in complete and utter awe every time I listen to this. Which is quite often by the way. This one is smoking!!!
Newborn was a phenomenal piano player. He has an amazing command of his instrument, especially when you consider how young he is at the time of this recording (only twenty-three). I really wish I could have seen this two-handed phenom in his prime, I just can't believe how fast he played and with so much reckless abandonment! The guy just cuts loose. I guess being that his idols were cats like Bird, Dizzy, and Tatum to name a few, you know that he is going to be unconventional and tear it up without any thought of conventionality. Wait until you hear his versions of "The More I See You" and "I'm Beginning to See the Light" - for I can guaranty you've never heard anything quite like it. And that is part of the beauty of it all - the man was definitely an original. Phineas Newborn Jr. is accompanied by the always steady Oscar Pettiford on bass, the great Kenny Clarke (a.k.a. Klook, smooth as always with his brushes) on drums and brother Calvin Newborn on guitar for three of the tracks. This recording easily deserves a five-star rating. " |
