CD ReviewsStill at the Top John Tapscott | Canada | 06/10/2002 (5 out of 5 stars) "Phil Woods was nearing his 70th birthday when this CD was recorded aboard the QE2 in November of 2000. But the years have not diminshed Woods' ability or enthusiasm at all. He is still the reigning king of alto players with a full, rich sound that is surely the envy of every one who picks up that horn.
Just listen to the way Woods charges into the opening "A Beautiful Friendship" with great melodic invention and joyous swing. His solo here is a breathtaking "tour de force." But every track is outstanding. Some of my favorites include Kenny Dorham's "Philly Twist" on which Woods in joined in the front line by trumpeter Roy Hargrove. Both men inspire one another. Hargrove's beautiful flugelhorn sound is also on display on "These Foolish Things." Also outstanding are Woods' interpretations of two lovely Alec Wilder ballads, "Trouble is a Man" and "I'll Be Around." The trio backing Woods here is excellent, too - Bill Charlap, piano; Peter Washington, bass; and Wille Jones on drums. Charlap has held the piano chair in Woods' working quintet for several years and he works hand in glove with the altoist. No where is this more evident than in their exciting exchanges on the title track, Kenny Barron's "Voyage." Charlap's style is thougtful and lyrical, but he can swing hard, too. He is an excellent foil for Woods. This CD is beautifully recorded, better than some of the other CD's I've heard in the Floating Jazz Festival series. In summary, Phil Woods has been one of my favorite jazz musicians for years. I have heard most of his recordings and can honestly report that he is at the top of his game here, relaxed, swinging, and soulful. Whether you are a veteran Woods fan or new to his work, you will enjoy this highly satisfying CD. Recommended without reservation." |
