"Beautiful, solemn renditions of the most sacred byzantine chants of the Holy Week/Easter period. Once you hear a hymn chanted by Gaitanos it is very difficult to adjust to any variants of the hymns by other chanters. His coloration and emphasis is perfect in accordance to the meaning the hymn conveys, without any extra self-promoting, egotistical "trilles" and over-acting. Gaitanos sets the benchmark. The Byzantine choirs he uses or assembles are top-notch and deserve more international exposure. Anybody with serious interest not just in byzantine but early music would be thrilled by the experience of the music in this cd.
If you cannot buy both this and "Ora Enati", buy this. Else the two do not contain exactly the same hymns despite some overlap and they are both worth having. His "Pentikostarion" is is also very inspiring. I would actually like to see him sing the entire volume of church music on cd, since I use his music to learn how to chant the hymns. I'd love to see the cd's published with the byzantine music included not just the words of the chants."
