CD Reviews

Prokofiev saves the day
Kimba W. Lion | the East Coast | 01/28/2005
(4 out of 5 stars)

""Weird Al" revels in the childlike (and, in a couple of spots, childish) side of his sense of humor in his reworking of Peter and the Wolf. It's definitely aimed at a younger audience, but not too young--there are a couple of "gross-out" jokes in the piece. At the same time, there's humor aimed at adults, so the result is sort of a Jay Ward-esque view of Prokofiev's musical story--a "Fractured Fairy Tale" for synth and accordion. Yankovic pours all his energy into his narration, and Wendy Carlos has fun re-working the music for her machine(s). The result may not be something you'd play as often as either person's solo albums, but definitely worth having for repeated plays anyway.

The other work on the disc, Carnival of the Animals Part Two, is not as interesting. Yankovic gets into the same spirit as the verses Ogden Nash wrote for the original Carnival, but Carlos' music is dull, with no great melodies nor interesting sounds from the synths.

Still, this disc is definitely a keeper for the Peter and the Wolf portion."
Very funny

I don't like to type "lol", but...

"So, people type "LOL" all the time, and it usually doesn't mean anything.

Listening to this album today at the office caused me to literally laugh out loud. As in, spontaneous outburst of audible laughter. As in, people near my office probably thought I was crazy.

That is all."
