Synopsis

Album Description
Guitarist/Singer/Songwriter, Peter Malick, describes his music as "The intersection where BB King meets Lou Reed... not a busy corner." Assisted by Tom Petty keyboardist Benmont Tench and featuring Tom Hambridge, producer of Susan Tedeschi's debut hit CD on drums and handling production, the CD features 13 songs, 11 penned by Malick. With a history that spans such diverse scenes as backing blues greats Muddy Waters, Freddy King, John Lee Hooker & Big Mama Thornton, to living in the home of his mentor, Blues Pianist Otis Spann, to his two years as conductor & guitarist for the musical Hair, to his 'wasted years' working as a casino employee ("everything from shill, to dealer, to casino manager"), to the present day fronting his band based in Boston. Malick's songs are 'snapshots' of his life. A unique CD.

CD Reviews

One cool cat on the prowl!

"Peter Malick makes some of the most unique and enjoyable music on the Blues circuit today. What struck me immediately was his voice, which is hauntingly like Tom Verlaine (of Television) and Lou Reed of rock fame. Malick delivers a song in a Reed sort of way, not really singing, just telling the story in bits and pieces with a rhythmic spoken word and sing-song ambiance. The music takes on a life of it's own with the guidance of Malick's mysterious and engaging vocalism. As the CD unfolds it creates many different pictures in your psyche. Yes, this is the Blues, but there is much more than the music at your disposal. The songs will evoke feelings of steamboat gambling, gangsters, smoke filled bar rooms and romances. I can see Peter and his group playing in the back drop of all the scenes. This is one cool cat on the prowl. A very entertaining and enjoyable CD. -MuzikMan/September 1999"

"What got into HIGH FLYER. He should turn his hearing aid on. Maybe he doesn't like songs that tell real stories, but likes his music homogenized. MALICK writes from the heart and plays guitar with a warts and all style that is his. While no virutoso depending on blistering speed to get his point across, he plays with loads of feeling and without resorting to cliche's. Don't take HIGH FLYER's word for it. Both MALICK cd's ( the other one with AMYL JUSTIN ) are excellent listening and will grow on you with every listen. I have 1000 or so cd's and both of MALICK's cd's still get regular airplay. Only about 50 or so cd's that have been in my collection that long could make similar claims."
The depth and feeling of Chicago blues with a new twist.

"Peter Malick's"Wrong Side of My Life" is the real thing. Here's theunmistakable reality of blues with an original and personal slant.Starting with the opening track "I Wrote the Book", this disc is filled with cleverly written, believable lyrics and fantastic guitar playing that is very reminiscent of Buddy Guy in the 60s but with a unique touch that is all Malick. This cd hits hard with great lyrics and driving blues guitar. "Casino Massacre of 1999" is based on a real life character Malick met while he was earning a living as a card shark in Vegas in the 80s. Here again, the guitar playing alone will blow you away, but the artist displays his gift for writing powerful lyrics that grab you. If you love blues and/or great blues rock, you've got to get this cd! Great band and production by drummer Tom Hambridge, who also produced Susan Tedeschi's "Just Won't Burn". "Wrong Side of My Life" is definitely one of the best blues cds issued in 1998."
