Contained on this one disc are some of the major French compositions of this century. Ravel's Le Tombeau de Couperin (1917) was written to the memory of friends of Ravel who were killed in World War I. Astonishingly, Ravel gives to the tombeau (an 18th century dance) a quirky 20th-century feel. A true masterpiece. Also here are two of the three Gymnopedies of Erik Satie, orchestrated by Debussy. Fauré is represented by his "Pelleas et Melisande" suite. The miracle here is that they translate well to the chamber orchestra size. The Orpheus group were born playing this music. --Paul Cook

CD Reviews

From Orpheus, the best as usual
Thomas B Dawkins | 05/03/2000

"As a part-time oboist, I can appreciate the unbelievably high level of technique needed to perform the Ravel Tombeau de Couperin, and there are few performances that are better than this. The speed of the Prélude is very quick without feeling rushed as it is light while being very controlled throughout. The other three movements are also quite beautiful. The Ravel Pavane is good, though not stellar. The two Gymnopédies of Satie, as orchestrated by Debussy, are very lovely. It is rare to hear these works in their orchestral form, and this rendition is particularly nice. The Fauré selections are just as good as the rest, although it would have been nice to have a complete Pelleas et Melissande as well as the Masques et Bergamasques. The famous Fauré Pavane tops off this selection of some of the best French Impressionist chamber orchestra selections, with a magnificent ensemble that breathes together and feels the music as a single unit."
My favorite orchestra recording of 1996

"Orpheus sounds great here. Le Tombeau de Couperin is fast and light, great intonation. Fine audio engineering too. The Satie and Faure fill out a nice hour of relaxing music."
