"The late, great Paulinho Nogueira is one of the "big three" guitarist/composer/arrangers of his generation along with Baden Powell, and Luis Bonfa. While Powell and Bonfa left Brazil during the dictatorship and achieved international recognition, Paulinho stayed with his family in São Paulo, performing and producing a large and impressive body of recordings. He is considered the very best at making solo guitar arrangements of Jobim and other Brazilian classics. His has also written a number of songs which show him to be a fine singer in the classic soft voice bossa style. I've been collecting his recordings for over 30 years whcih has been difficult and confined mostly used LPs and only very recently on new CDs via the internet.
I bought this album, 20 Supersucessos, even though it contains several titles which I already have by Phim. But to my delight, these are all different recordings. So my old favorites of Zelão, Odeon, Bachianinha Nº 1, Choro Nº 1, A Mesma Rosa Amarela, are all "new" again and wonderful. Other titles, which are new to me, are also delightful, including O Barquinho, Aria na 4a corda. This is a CD full of great music by the not to be overlooked master, Paulinho Nogueira."
