CD Reviews

Paul Oakenfold- A Lively Mix
J. Dunkel | Lakeland, FL USA | 12/14/2006
(5 out of 5 stars)

"If you have heard Oakenfold's newest artist release "A Lively Mind" and enjoyed it, you will like this one as well. This mix includes eight tracks from Oakey's last album, with each song being more of a club mix and mixed by Oakenfold. Most of these mixes were used on Oakenfold's tour with Madonna and his album release tour back in the fall, which I did see in Orladno and was a phenomenal show Oakey and Sandra Collins put on. Anyways, to the album itself. It starts with a extended club mix of "Faster Kill Pussycat" with Britney Murphy. The track is near six minutes long opposed to the radio friendly four minutes on the album, allowing the listener to hear more riffs and effects in the beginning. Now, from this point to track six, the mixes of the tracks are pretty much the same as the album versions. The tracks say club mix on the tracklistings, but there are minimal differences in the edits. But, all of the tracks are already club-like mixes being in about six to seven minutes in length. They include the trance-friendly favorite "Save the Last Trance for Me," then the hip-hop induced funky "Sex N' Money" with Pharell Williams, "Vulnerable", the awesome "Not Over" with Ryan Tedder, and the addicting dance song of "Amsterdam." Then, the album finishes with the Roman Hunter mixes of the upbeat, rock tracks "No Comprimise" and "Feed Your Mind." Both tracks feature Spitfire (which I think sounds similar to Anthony Keidis from the Red Hot Chili Peppers), but are remixed well for the clubs by Roman Hunter. They have a trance like sound, but very upbeat and has alot of energy to end the mix, especially on "Feed Your Mind." The mix is mixed very well by Oakey, but the mix is shorter than a usual mix, only being about 48 minutes long. Apparently, these are very limited and only 1500 or so are being distributed, so get it soon if you are considering getting it. I placed the order on Amazon about a month ago, and just received it two days ago because it is an import. The only negative thing about the mix is that from the first track to track four, right before the next track begins, there is a small moment of silence that happens, that is a little distracting but is only a small fraction of a second and only happens on the first four tracks. Otherwise, this is a very good mix of one of the best artist albums of 2006."
