CD ReviewsEldritch Anthony Cooper | Louisville, KY United States | 05/09/2007 (3 out of 5 stars) "This is the first Motian-Lovano-Frisell CD I've purchased and heard. I have two of Motion's Electric Band discs, "Reincarnation Of A Love Bird" and "Garden Of Eden". I was surprised to hear there are many similarities. The songs penned by Motian are spare and impressionistic, but the main difference is that the instrumentation is more individual on "Trioism". "Trioism" opens with "It Should Have Happened", which effectively summarizes the rest of the CD. The melody is eldritch and stated in parts by Lovano and Frisell. Frisell plays very creative guitar. There's the noise, the jazz, and the twang. Motian and Lovano are also playing fairly "out". Motian in his typical style is non-obviously driving the song. The CD starts off pretty well, the trio bumps into each other to good profit in "Cosmology," "Blue Midnight" is prettier, and "Congestion" puts a good melody around busy drumming. After that, the rest of disc isn't quite as good. They're certainly not taking the easy road with this CD, so that may be why. The exception is "In Remembrance Of Things". Dewey Redman comes in and shakes things up to good effect. I like it, but with some reservations.
