McCandless' Best Solo outing
Phasedin | New Jersey | 04/20/2005
(5 out of 5 stars)

"Sadly out of print, this could be (to my ears) McCandles' very best solo recording (apart from his usual group, Oregon).

The music has a very cinematic, panoramic quality to it-as though some of it were written as a soundtrack to a film with allot of ariel scenes of landscapes.

It's not like Paul's usual smaller group more intimate outings. This one is almost orchestral with excellent use of synthesizers and other horn players.

Musicians who appear on this are Trilok Gurtu (hand percussion), Paul on Oboe, English Horn, Synthesizers, and Saxophones and several other wind instruments, Paul's old friend and collaborator (and excellent pianist) Art Lande (Piano) Steve Rodby (Upright Bass) as well as 2 other horn players and a couple of additional musicians helping out on sampled percussion, additional synthesizers and programming. A fairly larger group than McCandless usually works with, but the final results prove that Paul indeed had a master plan for this recording. He certainly was inspired when he wrote and recorded this one back around 1988.

Gurtu's use of percussion in particular is simply perfect-no normal drum kit could do justice to this music, it would simply be too heavy-handed.

Lets hope Windham Hill records (or someone) puts this one back in print .

This one should really have been on ECM records..THEY probably would have left it in print at least (and it SOUNDS like an ECM recording, anyway...)"

"This album is.......I can`t find the words! I got it yesterday and I am impressed. It would be foolish to try to describe this music with words. It is a mystery to me why WINDHAM HILL no longer has it in print! :)"

"I heard the track "Sojourner" on a WH Sampler LP. I had never heard of Paul McCandless before. Right from the first I knew it was the music I had been waiting all my life to hear.

With difficulty, I obtained a copy of the whole album namely, Heresay. All the tracks were wonderful and completely different.

Since then I have obtained all albums recorded by Paul under his own name. I also have several Oregon albums. As an improvising pianist living in Australia, I was losing interest in the mainstream of modern Jazz. This music took me in a different direction. It is rewarding listening at many levels. It is accessable on the first hearing and subsequent hearings reveal further musical rewards. The harmonic structures are sublime. The melody lines are evocative, origional and...just wonderful! I have started to write music again, having been inspired by the genius of this man. His music is an interface to another world. I'd love to meet him!

Art Lande is of special interest to me (as a pianist). In a slightly different way, he is as inspiring to me as Paul McCandless. I have since heard lots of Art and Paul (including some duo performances). They often seem to be both plugged into the same brain!

I share the hope that this album will come into print again."
