CD ReviewsMusic That Changed My Life! Oded Fried-Gaon | 10/30/2007 (5 out of 5 stars) "Anyone who listens to this or any other recording that features Paul Desmond instantly recognizes the sound. Yeah, it's the dude from Take 5, isn't it?! yeah, it sure is. Other than the beautiful tone of his saxophone, and his lyrical improvisation, there are also some not-half-bad legends that accompany him here. Namely, Percy Heath on bass, and Jim Hall on guitar, and oh yeah the great Connie Kay on drums. They swing and they bop, and they bring to life one of the greatest periods of jazz: the late 50s into early 60s. East of the Sun features my favorite track for which the album is also named. It's a track written by relative unknow Brooks Bowman, a Princeton graduate who died in a car accident at age 23, on route to his first job as composer with a film studio. I remember reading about a great cover of this particular song that Sonny Rollins did in 2002. This cd is one of the real gems that highlights the laid-back and super-cool personality of a still-young Paul Emil Breitenfeld."
