CD ReviewsExcellent new album by rock legends The Paul Collins Beat RockNRollGuy | California | 03/30/2008 (5 out of 5 stars) "Ribbon Of Gold is the follow-up album to 2007's critically acclaimed studio album Flying High and Live In Europe, a greatest hits live release which is only available as a free mp3 download on their official website. If you aren't familiar with the work of The Paul Collins Beat, I recommend visiting their website or their myspace to sample their albums.
The Beat/The Kids Are the Same The 10 radio-ready songs featured on this album were recorded in Europe and produced by the talented Chips Kiesby, known for his work with The Hellacopters and The Nomads. On this album, The Paul Collins Beat use more electric guitar and less acoustic guitar. Highlights on this release include She Doesn't Want To Hang Around With You, I Still Want You, Big Pop Song, Parlez Vous Français and Falling In Love. The rest of the album is great, but these songs are my personal favorites. The Beat Most people are aware that Paul Collins was a founding member of rock bands The Nerves (1974-1977) and The Beat (1977-1989). The Nerves independently released a vinyl EP containing the song Hanging On The Telephone, which would later become a hit when covered by Blondie on the Parallel Lines album. When The Nerves disbanded, Paul Collins formed a harder-rocking band called The Beat, in the style of groups such as The Ramones, The Beatles and AC/DC. During the 1990s, Paul Collins re-formed The Beat as Paul Collins' Beat, after recording several alt/country/rock/americana albums as a solo artist and singer/songwriter. The Paul Collins Beat still tour and they literally play concerts all over the world. With tour dates in places like Japan and Europe, they seem to tour the U.S. once a year. If you get a chance to see them perform live, you're in for a real treat. They still play the hits such as Rock N Roll Girl, Walking Out On Love, Dreaming and Look But Dont Touch in addition to new songs such as Helen, Will You Be A Woman, Afton Place and songs from this new album Ribbon Of Gold." |
